TECHNICAL DOSSIER & SWISS SOURCING

Swiss watch dials: turning an aesthetic intent into a production-ready route

A watch dial combines design, micromechanics, surface chemistry and handcraft. The challenge is not limited to making a base: colour, texture, gloss, flatness, applied-marker position, printing quality and appearance under different lighting must remain coherent from prototype to series.

OVEL searches for the Swiss dial maker or coordinated craft chain suited to the positioning, materials, decoration and volume. The RFQ identifies in-house operations, sensitive subcontracting and reference samples so the quotation addresses a measurable aesthetic result, not a drawing alone.

PROJECT SCOPE

01

Study, prototypes and samples

Design interpretation, 3D construction, process plans, tooling, prototypes and limits of colour or texture. Exploratory sample, functional prototype and series master are treated separately.

02

Bases, appliqués and components

Blanking, stamping, machining, turning, cutting or diamond finishing of appliqués; feet, openings, counters and interfaces with movement and case.

03

Decoration and finishing

Base treatment, electroplating, lacquer, polishing, blasting, sunburst, guilloché, engraving, transfer printing, luminous material, gem setting and final assembly.

Materials and dial construction

Material affects thickness, rigidity, layer adhesion, colour and decoration feasibility. The routing must account for every interface.

  • brass, precious metals and specified alloys
  • sapphire, ceramic, carbon and composites
  • mother-of-pearl, wood, stone and natural materials
  • single-layer, multi-layer or multi-material construction

Cosmetic criteria to contract

Terms such as deep blue or mirror polished are not acceptance criteria. Observation conditions and the approved reference must be defined.

  • colour master and permitted shade variation
  • gloss, texture, orientation and homogeneity
  • alignment of print, indices and apertures
  • allowable defects, magnification and inspection lighting

QUALIFICATION CRITERIA

The visual reference is as important as the dimensioned drawing

Approval should freeze design, process route, materials, colour, decoration and viewing conditions. Where many crafts interact, tolerance stack and operation sequence determine flatness, adhesion and final positioning.

We also qualify the ability to repeat the reference: bath and mixture management, production witnesses, lot traceability, master retention, cosmetic control and deviation approval. A successful prototype must be transferable to stable series production.

PREPARE AN ACTIONABLE RFQ

The information needed for a technically useful response

A clear dossier prevents incomparable quotations and hidden assumptions. Send what is available for the current project stage; missing points are converted into technical questions before the RFQ is circulated.

  • assembly drawing, artwork and casing dimensions
  • materials, construction, thickness and applied components
  • colour, texture, gloss and luminous-material references
  • prototype, pre-series and series volumes with launch timing
  • cosmetic criteria and observation conditions
  • tooling, master and reference-retention requirements

Expected qualification output

  • shortlist of partners whose capability profile matches the need
  • explicit feasibility questions and assumptions
  • clear boundary between in-house and outsourced operations
  • comparable basis for lead time, cost, quality and capacity

OVEL’s exact role

OVEL is not the workshop manufacturing the part and does not claim its partners’ certifications. We structure the requirement, search for suitable capacity in Switzerland, review the available evidence of fit and coordinate the technical exchange. The selected manufacturer remains responsible for final feasibility, its quotation, processes, inspections and contractual commitments.

FREQUENT TECHNICAL QUESTIONS

Decide faster without understating industrial risk

Can OVEL source a complete dial?

Yes. Study, base, appliqués, treatment, decoration, assembly and inspection may be covered by one integrator or a coordinated chain.

How are colour differences between lots controlled?

Define a master, viewing method, acceptable limits and management of baths, mixtures and production witnesses.

Are natural materials repeatable?

Their variation must be designed into the product and acceptance rules. Material sorting and sample approval may be needed.

When should tooling be approved?

After construction is stable and before pre-series. A decoration or thickness change may affect both tooling and routing.

Is OVEL a dial manufacture?

No. OVEL identifies and coordinates suitable Swiss know-how; the selected dial maker remains responsible for manufacture and conformity.
